Managed Services is the practice of transferring day-to-day responsibility to a third party that will be entrusted with the handling of operations such as Human Resources or Accounting.  Many businesses are not large enough to have their own Information Technology (IT) support, or are looking to reduce overall support costs.

Why do we need to manage our computers? Because it is costly not to!

Many businesses do not realize how computer lock-ups and crashes (downtime) can affect their bottom line.  Quantifying the cost of downtime is very difficult.  Downtime can cause a loss of productivity for a single user or a workgroup.  Other times, the implications are more serious and may affect core production, business process or entire departments.  Duration is also a critical factor.  A loss of a few minutes to an individual or group can be made up if employees stay late, but when downtime stretches to hours or days, the loss is more devastating.  Whenever downtime impairs business transactions, the length of the outage carries serious consequences.

A computer freeze and restart wastes at least ten minutes.  All the programs will take time getting up and running again, and then the user needs to resume the task.  (This does not include lost time for redoing tasks that were not saved.)  If two daily 10-minute downtime occur in a business, at a conservative employee rate of $25 an hour (and based on 240 working days per year), costs a business $2,000 per year.  In a more likely scenario each crash would wastes about 15-minutes that would cost a business per year $3,000.

Now let’s consider a server or network crash.  The average small business has a network of 8 to 20 computers.  The cost of two 15-minute downtime periods for 8 employees is $24,000 per year.  With 20 employees this would be a loss of $60,000. (This assumes that the staff can recover without3rd party IT support.)

Contrary to public opinion, crashes are not normal.  With today’s operating systems and software, everything should be very stable.

Yet many businesses continue to suffer computer downtime. Why?

The majority of the time, system crashes are due to viruses and spyware.  Other causes include software conflicts, operating system corruption and outdated/failing hardware. (Ignoring error messages is dangerous, especially if the same error message pops up time and again.)
